It was a 68 minute 6 reel feature that was a story of friendship and heartbreak. The movie is based on a mother who left her baby behind in a limousine in hopes that it will have a better life. The baby eventually ends up in the hands of Charlie Chaplin whos character is only known as “The Tramp”. After realizing he cannot rid himself of the infant he takes it home and raises it as his own. Five years later John; the name The Tramp gave him has grown into a boy who is played by Jackie Cooper. The two comically go about their day to day activities in their shanty apartment. The film is somewhat inspired by Chaplin’s real life, as sadly, two years prior to the production his wife’s firstborn died three days after delivery. It is very likely his sense of loss inspired him to be such a sympathetic character. Warren G. Harding (Republican) wins presidency by a landslide The newly elected president won against James M. Cox (Democrate) by a whopping 60.3%. This was the first election where women were allowed to vote in 30 states thus bringing the number of able voters from 18.5 million in 1916 to 26.8 million in 1920. Harding’s main campaign slogan was “Return to Normalcy” playing off the social upheaval caused by progressive president Theodore Roosevelt’s progressivism. Roosevelt however has died of a cardiovascular disease in January 6, 1919. And many believe Harding won by a landslide due to Woodrow Wilson causing people to feel antagonistic towards the Democratic Party.
