Arebhashe dialect

Arebhashe is a dialect of Kannada spoken mainly by Gowda and other communities in the region of Kodagu (Coorg) as well as Sullia of Dakshina Kannada in the Indian state of Karnataka.[1]

It is spoken in the Bandadka Village of Kasaragod district of Kerala state. In Sullia Taluk, as the majority of the population belongs to the Gowda community,[2] most of others communicate language in the same dialect.

Etymology

It is a dialect of Kannada while using languages become semi-linguistic so it may have been called half language or Arebhashe(Are:half, Bhashe:speech). It has admixture of Old Kannada(Kannada: ಹಳೆಗನ್ನಡ). It also called as Gowda Kannada this termed coined by the Late Mariyappa Bhat,[3] Some of the letters ಙ,ಞ fading from Kannada still remain in this language.
