Pair of athletes (Delphi)

The pair of athletes, two bronze figurines at the Archaeological Museum of Delphi, remind vividly of the Pythian Games.

Description

In separate cases in the middle of room 9 of the Archaeological Museum of Delphi are exhibited three bronze statuettes. One is a Corinthian figurine of a man wearing himation and playing the double flute (460–450 B.C.) and two represent a pair of naked athletes, dating to the same period but originating from Attica. One of the athletes holds a jumping weight and a wreath or stlengis. These figurines constitute a proof of the Pythian Games, both athletic and musical, which took place in Delphi every four years.[1]
