1998 in home video

1998 is nearing the end of the dominance of the VHS format with the DVD overtaking tape sales by the early 2000s.[1] The so-called format wars are almost over with Sony's Betamax format ending production at about this same time.[2] The VHS format does not die out quickly because of its recording function, so many homes were adding a DVD player rather than replacing their VCRs. 1998 is a boom time for the brick and mortar video rental industry.[3]
